Tragedy on St. Helena Island: Mass Shooting at South Carolina Bar Leaves Four Dead, Twenty Others Injured

ST. HELENA ISLAND, South Carolina – A night of planned revelry turned into a scene of devastating violence early Sunday morning on the idyllic St. Helena Island, where a mass shooting at a crowded local establishment left four people dead and at least 20 others injured.

The tragic incident occurred at Willie's Bar and Grill. According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, a large crowd was present when the shooting erupted. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, with many witnesses and victims reportedly running to nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunfire.

Four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Of the at least 20 people injured, officials confirmed that four are in critical condition at area hospitals. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.

In a statement posted on social media, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office acknowledged the severity of the event: “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”

The horrific act of violence also drew immediate condemnation from elected officials. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace posted on X, stating she was "COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County," and offered prayers to all those impacted by the event.

The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting and the search for the person or persons responsible are ongoing. The community now grapples with the aftermath of one of the deadliest recent mass shootings in the region.
