FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) and midfielder Teboho Mokoena for allegedly fielding an ineligible player in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.
In a letter dated September 15, FIFA confirmed that both the SAFA and Mokoena have been charged with breaching disciplinary regulations. The case has been referred to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, and they have been given six days to submit their response.
The charge stems from Mokoena's participation in South Africa's 2-0 victory over Lesotho in March, despite having accumulated two yellow cards in previous qualifiers, which should have triggered a one-match suspension.
If found guilty, South Africa could face serious consequences, including forfeiting the match with a 3-0 loss to Lesotho, as well as potential fines and suspensions. This outcome would have a significant impact on the Group C standings, potentially affecting the World Cup qualification hopes of other teams like Nigeria and Benin.
