Flying Eagles Crash Out: Nigeria U-20 Suffer Heavy 4-0 Defeat to Clinical Argentina

SANTIAGO, CHILE – October 8, 2025
– Nigeria's journey at the FIFA U-20 World Cup came to a painful end on Wednesday as the Flying Eagles were soundly defeated 4-0 by a dominant Argentina side in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

The record six-time champions, Argentina, delivered a ruthless performance, controlling the game from the opening minutes and proving far too clinical for the African side.

Early Setback Dictates Pace

Argentina wasted no time in asserting their authority, breaking the deadlock just 2 minutes into the match. Forward Alejo Sarco opened the scoring, putting the Nigerians on the back foot immediately.

The early goal seemed to destabilize the Flying Eagles, and Argentina soon doubled their advantage. In the 23rd minute, Maher Carrizo curled in a superb free-kick that left the Nigerian goalkeeper with no chance, sending the South American team into the halftime break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

While Nigeria managed to create a couple of chances towards the end of the first half, the Argentine defense and goalkeeper were resolute, ensuring the score remained unchanged.

Second Half Rout

The second half saw no reprieve for the Flying Eagles as Argentina continued their impressive attack.

Maher Carrizo secured his brace and Argentina's third goal in the 53rd minute with a clinical finish from a counterattack, effectively sealing Nigeria's fate. The final nail was driven in at the 66th minute when substitute Mateo Silvetti added the fourth goal, completing the rout.

The 4-0 result reflects Argentina's superiority on the day, as they were decisive in front of goal. The victory serves as a measure of revenge for Argentina, who were defeated 2-1 by Nigeria in the same stage of the 2023 tournament when they were the host nation.

The loss ends the campaign for the Nigerian U-20 team, who finished the group stage with four points following a win against Saudi Arabia, a draw with Colombia, and a loss to Norway. Argentina now advances to the quarterfinals, where they will face Mexico.
