Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Ruth Elton, Britain's Devoted Missionary and Adopted Daughter

Ilesa, Osun State
- Ruth Elton, the revered British-born Nigerian missionary, has died at the age of 91. She passed away on Saturday at the Sharon compound, Alafia Bamin Quarters, in Ilesa, Osun State, leaving behind a profound legacy of faith and service.

Born on September 7, 1933, Ruth Elton was the only daughter of Sydney Granville Elton, a key figure in the establishment of Pentecostalism in Nigeria. She embarked on her lifelong mission to Nigeria with her parents in 1937 and dedicated her life to missionary work across several states, including Kogi, Ondo, Oyo, and Osun.

Elton's love for Nigeria was so deep that she renounced her British citizenship in the 1970s, becoming a naturalized Nigerian. Fluent in both Ebira and Yoruba languages, she fully immersed herself in the culture and people she served. Throughout her life, she remained a staunch believer in her father's prophecy that Nigeria, despite its challenges with corruption, would one day be recognized for its righteousness and prosperity.

Beyond her spiritual contributions, Ruth Elton made significant strides in public health, particularly in Okene, Kogi State. She was instrumental in reducing infant mortality rates by addressing critical issues like the lack of proper care and the harmful practice of force-feeding babies. Her tireless efforts and dedication left an indelible mark on the communities she served. Her passing is a great loss to all who knew and were touched by her work.
