Man Butchers Mother with Axe, Sings Beside Corpse in Chhattisgarh

In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken the community of Jashpur district in Chhattisgarh, a man brutally killed his own mother with an axe before sitting near her body for hours, singing and threatening anyone who dared to approach. The accused, identified as Jeet Ram Yadav, 28, allegedly committed the heinous act on Tuesday morning.

The gruesome attack took place at approximately 5 a.m. in the Bendrerbhadra settlement of Kunkuri district. According to witnesses, Yadav repeatedly struck his 59-year-old mother, Gulabai, with the axe until she died on the spot. The severity of the assault was such that parts of her body were beyond recognition, as described by police.

What followed was even more horrifying to the terrified neighbors. Instead of fleeing the scene, Yadav remained seated just meters from his mother's butchered body. He was seen humming songs and playing with sand, seemingly unfazed by the brutality he had just committed. This chilling behavior prevented anyone from getting close to the crime scene.

Horrified family members and neighbors raised an alarm, but none dared to intervene. The accused, still holding the bloodied axe, swung the weapon at anyone who attempted to approach him, making it impossible for locals to render assistance or secure the area.

Upon receiving the report, police from the Kunkuri station were dispatched to the scene. They found a large crowd of local residents gathered outside the house, all too afraid to enter. The police officers initially hesitated to approach Yadav, who had become increasingly aggressive and was brandishing the axe.

A tense standoff ensued, lasting for nearly four hours. The police had to engage in careful negotiations and tactical planning to subdue the agitated man. The sheer time it took to safely take him into custody highlights the difficulty and danger of the situation.

Jashpur Superintendent of Police, Shashimohan Singh, confirmed the arrest and stated that the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation. However, he noted that prima facie, it appears Yadav suffers from an "unstable mind."

Family members who spoke to the media revealed that Yadav's mental condition had deteriorated over the past two years. He had been undergoing treatment from traditional healers, known as "baigas," in the area. This sheds light on a potential long-standing mental health struggle that may have contributed to the tragedy.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and a thorough investigation is underway. Police hope to determine the precise sequence of events and the motive behind the extreme step taken by the accused. The local authorities are also looking into the circumstances surrounding his mental health treatment.

This horrific crime underscores the critical need for greater awareness and access to professional mental healthcare, particularly in rural and remote areas where traditional healing methods are often the only recourse. The lack of proper psychiatric support can have devastating consequences for both the individual and their family.

The community is in shock and grieving the loss of Gulabai, a mother whose life was taken in such a violent and senseless manner. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the profound impact that mental illness can have when left unaddressed.

The hope now is that justice will be served and that the case will prompt a broader conversation about the importance of mental health and the need for more accessible resources to prevent similar incidents in the future.
