The Indian government has granted a Unified License to Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, clearing the way for its commercial launch in the country. The approval, issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), comes after Starlink agreed to a set of stringent terms and conditions focused on data sovereignty and national security.
The license mandates that Starlink must establish an earth station gateway in India, and all user data originating from or destined for India must be routed through this domestic gateway. This prevents user traffic from being routed through or mirrored to any system or server located abroad. The license also includes a clear prohibition on the decryption or copying of Indian user data outside of the country.
The approval is a major development in India's telecommunications sector, with Minister Sekhar highlighting that satellite-based communication is an emerging area that is expected to generate jobs in the country.
